My turn at this –Claudia is getting us packed up for the flight home tomorrow. Zoe is currently drawing here next to me on the couch. We found her some big crayons and she is doing her best to fill the notebook with priceless art. Kind of a slow day today –we’re ready to come home to “our stuff.” We picked up her passport and visa packet this morning –she is officially ours and is allowed into the states –always a good sign. We went to Taipei 101 this afternoon and rode the “World’s Fastest Elevator” to the observation deck of the “World’s Tallest Building”. It really was amazing to see the entire city from there. Before leaving, I do need to share a couple observations about Taiwan. First, this is a great place –the people are very friendly and open to outsiders. However, it is a miracle that any of them are alive due to their driving and lack of any organized traffic patterns –riding in a cab here is one of the most frightening things we have EVER experienced. It is not an exaggeration to say that lane markers are viewed as merely suggestions –it is common to have the cab just take off into oncoming traffic. Right-of-way at intersections is defined by who races there first and honks the loudest. Secondly, while they have embraced the finer points of western culture, namely Starbucks every block or so, they have yet to master the nuances of having the coffee shop open in the MORNING when you want coffee. Imagine my surprise when I walked down to get coffee at 6am only to find that they don’t open until 9 –again, kind of missing the point for the whole venture. Oh well, trip has been great and Zoe is a doll. She felt so comfortable with us today that she threw her first temper tantrum when she didn’t get her way on something –my favorite part was when she took off her shoe and slammed it on the floor al la Kruschev- very dramatic!
